Consider/Approve Amendment to Board Policy #3.202 – Emergency Preparedness Plan

Background Information:

This policy was last visited by the Board at its September 13, 2007, meeting and the Board previously approved the District’s Emergency Preparedness Plan on May 18, 2009. This Plan is updated annually; however, no major revisions have been issued since its adoption. This policy recommendation is a small step towards improving the preparedness of our students and staff through a requirement for an annual safety drill for armed intruders.  Current law requires three annual safety drills in addition to the monthly fire drills, and this recommended policy focuses one of these three annual safety drills on armed intruders. This policy amendment will not cause any changes to current practice since we already have an annual drill for armed intruders, i.e., lockdown. Additionally, legislation has been filed addressing this issue as well. TSBA’s recommended policy simply updates a policy that is receiving much attention as of late. The Board’s current policy is attached for your information.

Staff Recommendation:

I recommend approval of the amendment to Board Policy #3.202 – Emergency Preparedness Plan, on first reading.
